When Counterspelling, the character must first identify the spell being cast using a Spellcraft skill check. Upon successfully identifying the spell the character determines the amount of Mana required to Counterspell, if priority:magic:spells:tier3:dispel_magic will be used, or if the use of a True Counter is an option. After determining which method of Counterspell will be used the character may immediately attempt to Counter the spell being cast. Regardless of if the attempt is successful the character who is Counterspelling loses their next Standard Action. Further Counterspell attempts in the same round will then spend a Move Action for the second attempt and then the third Counterspell will spend the remaining Swift Action. Due to this, the maximum number of Counterspell attempts is 3 per round (if the character fails to Counterspell, they may not attempt to counter the same spell with any remaining Counterspell attempts, and they still expend Mana regardless of the outcome). By default, the DC to Counterspell is 11 + the Spell Tier, though this may vary based upon other Talents or unique effects in play. If multiple characters attempt to Counterspell the same effect, the character with the highest caster level check succeeds. If there is a tie, the character with the highest Ability Score Modifier for their relevant spellcasting ability succeeds. <WRAP center round info 60%> Caster Level checks involve rolling 1d20 and adding your Caster Level to the result. Temporary increases to your Caster Level are valid for Counterspelling purposes. </WRAP> Counterspelling effectiveness may be increased by three means: - **Dispel Magic:** As part of the normal Mana expenditure and action involved in Counterspelling, a spellcaster may cast priority:magic:spells:tier3:dispel_magic to receive an untyped +5 bonus to their Caster Level check to dispel. For example, if you wish to counter a Fireball as it is being cast, you must know priority:magic:spells:tier3:dispel_magic to use this option, and spend 6 Mana (3 against the T3 spell, 3 for priority:magic:spells:tier3:dispel_magic), to roll your Caster Level check at a +5 bonus. - **Dispell Magic, Greater** As part of the normal Mana expenditure and action involved in Counterspelling, a spellcaster may cast priority:magic:spells:tier6:dispel_magic_greater to receive an untyped +10 bonus to their Caster Level check to dispel. For example, if you wish to counter a Fireball as it is being cast, you must know priority:magic:spells:tier6:dispel_magic_greater to use this option, and spend 9 Mana (3 against the T3 spell, 6 for priority:magic:spells:tier6:dispel_magic_greater), to roll your Caster Level check at a +10 bonus. - **True Counter:** As part of the normal Mana expenditure and action involved in Counterspelling, a spellcaster may cast the same spell, expending the Mana for it as well, to automatically succeed on the Caster Level check. To dispel an ongoing spell effect, such as a priority:magic:spells:tier2:fog_cloud or a patch of priority:magic:spells:tier1:grease, see priority:magic:spells:tier3:dispel_magic. You may always dispel your own spells without as check, as a Free Action.
